Czech A2 Exam — Format, Sections, and Scoring

The Czech A2 language exam is a standardised test of basic Czech proficiency. It is administered by UJOP and other accredited centres and is required for applying for permanent residence in the Czech Republic. This page explains exactly what is on the exam and how it is scored.

The four sections

The exam has four parts. Reading: 5 short tasks, 20 questions, 50 minutes. Listening: 5 audio tasks, 20 questions, ~35 minutes including playback. Writing: 2 short written tasks (e.g. a postcard and a personal note), about 30 minutes. Speaking: an interview with an examiner covering personal information, a description, and a short role-play, about 10 minutes per candidate.

Reading and Listening are answered on a paper answer sheet. Writing is hand-written. Speaking is recorded.

Pass mark and scoring

Each section is scored from 0 to 100%. To pass the whole exam, you need at least 60% in each individual section. A high score in one section does not compensate for failing another — all four must be passed independently. Results are usually issued within four weeks.

How to prepare effectively

Mock exams under realistic time pressure are the single most useful preparation tool. Practising one section in isolation is helpful for weak areas, but you also need to experience the full 2-hour test rhythm. CzechReady gives you both: free Reading and Listening practice for daily training, AI-evaluated Writing and Speaking for feedback, and full mock exams that mirror the real format.
